Business Success Is A Marathon, Not A Sprint!

Exercise is an important part of my life. I hope it is for you as well.  But sometimes we overdo it and try to get in shape in one fail swoop! Maybe you haven’t run in a while and you get out there and say to yourself, “I’m going to run a full sprint today!”  You give it everything you have….and then you break down with a torn muscle and can’t exercise at all for months.  You’ve forgotten one key factor about staying healthy – It’s a marathon, not a sprint!

Unfortunately, a lot of people–especially business owners–live their entire lives this way, not just their exercise habits. They don’t pace themselves in their daily actions and behaviors and instead go full-bore. Naturally, they soon burn out.

What I say to these people and to all business owners is that success is a marathon, not a sprint.

Business Success Is A Marathon, Not A Sprint!Every single day you need to be consistent with your practices, with revenue-producing activities, and with providing value to your clients.  Whether it’s studying, writing, researching new markets or networking with other entrepreneurs, anything of importance in your life needs to be practiced on a regular basis.  Whatever it is, you need to work on it, step by step, every single day.

This has to be independent of your mood, too. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re on top of the world or down in the dumps–success requires persistence, not reacting inconsistently to your own temporary emotional states.

Thirty years in business have taught me this value of persistence and consistency in my day to day operations. And that is the secret to success: not burning out and quitting on yourself–devoting yourself to your business as a practice every single day.
